A Class 1 trip inspection
A Class 1 trip inspection is a pre-trip inspection of a tractor-trailer combination unit that includes a visual inspection, an air brake test, and coupling:
Visual inspection: Check for damage, cracks, corrosion, deformations, or openings not designed by the manufacturer. Check the tires for proper inflation, tread depth, and damage. Check the mirrors, handrail, steps, battery, and emergency equipment.
Air brake test: Complete an air brake test.
Coupling: Check the condition and position of the fifth wheel plate, locking jaws, pins, and electrical cable.

A Class 1 trip inspection report is required for the Class 1 road test. The report must confirm that the vehicle was fully inspected within the last 24 hours.
Here are some tips for performing a pre-trip inspection:
Start by checking under the hood.
Check the gauges while inside the truck.
Walk around the truck and trailer to check the lights.
Walk around to check mechanical components.
Slowly pull ahead to check the steering and brake response.
